AIER’s 2017 Summer Fellowship Program comes to a close today. Our six summer fellows and four interns worked on various research projects under the supervision of AIER staff. The projects ranged from topics such as Bitcoin and blockchain to publications such as “The AIER Chart Book” and Harwood’s investment strategy.
Students presented the results of their research at an open forum on Wednesday, August 2. It was an opportunity for everyone to share the excitement of completing a project, and for the staff to critically examine the outcomes and ponder the direction of future research.
The summer program usually carries not only the research component, but also educational and cultural components. For the educational component, we had presentations by our researchers and the invited speakers, including the following:
- “From Tulips to Mortgages: a Minskian Perspective on Financial Crises,” presented by Dr. Daniel H. Neilson, Bard College at Simon’s Rock
- “Oral and Written Communications Skills: How to Communicate Effectively in the Classroom and Workplace,” presented by Dr. Jay Liebowitz, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, and Ms. Janet Zeide, Montgomery College
- “Credit Market and the Aggregate Savings Rate: Evidence from OECD Countries,” presented by Dr. George Vachadze, City University of New York
- “The Economics of Bitcoin and Blockchain,” presented by Max Gulker, AIER
- “A Review of the Harwood Philosophy on Business Cycles and Personal Investment Plans,” presented by Bob Hughes, AIER
The cultural component provides the opportunity to explore the Berkshires’ cultural offerings. We attended the Tanglewood rehearsal for the Music Center Opening Exercises at Ozawa Hall, saw “Cymbeline” at Shakespeare & Company, and visited the new exhibition “Inventing America: Rockwell and Warhol” at the Norman Rockwell Museum.
As the students learned a lot of new skills at AIER, they became better prepared for the next step in their career. We are sad to have them depart today, and we wish them well. As students are leaving, we are preparing to start our academic-year internship program in September to continue the legacy of our founder, Col. E.C. Harwood, who advocated “efforts to promote independent scientific inquiry and education.”
